He was born in 1920 and grew up in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, a downtown atmosphere.

He studied carving with the famous sculptor Takamura Ko-Un, who allowed him to use the Chinese character UN 雲(clouds) for his name and add KI 喜, to bring joy and happiness.

His statues try to express greatfulness and to bring peace of mind to their owners.
His speciality is the technique of "yosegi-zukuri 寄木造, 寄木作り".
Yosegi is a technique to carve wooden sculptures, in which individually carved blocks of wood are joined together. The carving is then completed and the final sculpture is finished with lacquer and gold leaf or paint.

Statue of Jenner

The memorial statue is dedicated to the British physician Edward Jenner (1749-1823). It was executed by Yonehara Unkai, a pupil of the famous sculptor Takamura Kôun in 1896 on the request of the Great Japan Private Health Association to commemorate the centenary of Jenner's discovery of vaccination and the resulting immunity against smallpox. The inscription on the base gives Jenner's name in Japanese Kanji characters.
