Tsubota Saimyo
Tsubota Saimyoo 坪田最明(つぼたさいみょう)
Born 1956 in Kyoto in a family of shrine and temple carpenters.
He studied modern sculpture first, but later learned Buddhist sculpture from Matsumoto Myokei, who gave him the name of Saimyo in 1986, passing on the MYO 明 of his own name.
In 1991 he became independent, his workshop 坪田最明工房 is near the famous temple Shin-nyo Do (Shin nyoo doo 真如堂) in Kyoto. Sometimes he carves for an individual customer, according to the needs of each person.
He often carves very small statues "for your pocket to carry around" (keitai butsu 携帯仏) or to keep in a modern home without a proper Buddhist house altar.
